INTRODUCTION :

3rd  International  Symposium  on  “Emerging  Trends  and  Technologies  in  Libraries  and  Information  Services”   ETTLIS- 2012 was  organized  by  the  Learning  Resource  Centre  of  Jaypee  University of Engineering & Technology   Guna & Jaypee  Institute  of  Information  Technology  Noida  with  the  Society  for  the  Advancement  of  Library  and  Information  Science during  October 26 & 27,  2012.

AIM OF THE SYMPOSIUM  :

The  aim  of  the  symposium  was  to  bring  researchers,  academicians,  business  community  and  research  scholars  on  a  common  platform  to  share  their  experiences,  innovative  ideas  and  research  findings  about  the  major  aspects  of  emerging  trends  and  technologies  in  the  field  of  knowledge  resource  centers  and  information  services. 

PARTICIPANTS  :

180 delegates including 11 International participants   from seven countries  as details below participated in symposium.

Indian delegates came from 17 different states of India namely Andhra Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab ,Haryana, Uttarakhand , Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra ,Manipur, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Sikkim, Tamilnadu & Madhya Pradesh. The symposium participants formed a good blend of professionals from various segments like Information Scientists, Researchers, Librarians, Information Managers/Officials, Professional Associations, Library & Information Science Teachers, Students etc.

PAPER PRESENTATIONS :

Of the 220 papers received on various topics of the symposium 121 were chosen for publication in the pre print through a process of peer review and editing. The criterion for the selection was essentially the quality of paper and its relevance to the symposium theme. The symposium pre-prints are published by M/s Thomson Press, New Delhi. The papers belonged to different themes as detailed below:

SYMPOSIUM CONDUCT :

The symposium primarily consisted of an Inaugural Session, Plenary Session, Invited Papers And Guest Lecture, Paper Presentation, Panel Discussion, Poster Presentation and Commercial Presentation and a Valedictory Function. There were Exhibition Stalls put up by several publishing houses and other organizations.

The Inaugural Session :

The inaugural session was presided by Prof K.K Jain Dean (Academics) Chairman LRC JUET Guna. The Symposium inaugurated with Saraswati Vandana followed by Lighting of Lamp by the dignitaries. While Dr. Sanjay Kataria briefed about the ETTLIS -2012, Prof D.S. Hooda Dean (Research) JUET Guna welcomed the gathering, Mr. Allan Hopkinson delivered his address as Chief Guest. Shri. I.R. Kumar Chairman SALIS Delhi NCR Chapter and Shri S.H. Mankad also addressed the delegates with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sudeep Sharma.

Plenary Session and Technical Presentations:

After the Inaugural session the symposium started with plenary lecture, Invited lecture and Technical presentations in parallel sessions. Seven plenary and Guest lectures were held and 53 papers were presented during the symposium. The sessions had intense deliberations and brain storming leading high level of intellectual discussion. The sessions were chaired and co-chaired by eminent professionals and rapporteur provided the necessary support and co-ordination, the Annexure gives the details of the presentation during the symposium. An eminent jury selected papers based on content and quality of presentation for different awards. This is expected to act as catalyst in improving the levels of Symposium.

Poster Session:

Two poster sessions were held on one on each day in which 57 posters were presented by delegates covering a wide range of topics. The poster session attracted a large number of delegates around the presentation area.

Commercial Presentation and Exhibition:

A large no of stalls were available for display of exhibits relating to various aspects of library science and information services. The stalls attracted large no of visitors during the two day symposium.

Commercial presentations were made by many organizations during time slot allotted during the symposium. There presentation evoked a large response from audience.

VALEDICTORY FUNCTION :

The valedictory function was held at the end of the symposium chaired by Prof N.J. Rao Vice Chancellor JUET Guna with Shri. I.R. Kumar, Dr. Nirmal Swain Repporteur General, Dr. Sanjay Kataria, Organizing Secretary, Prof N. Laxman Rao , Mr. Antony Kidd, Mr. Shriram and Dr. Sudeep Sharma on the Dias.

The summary of proceeding was presented by Dr. Nirmal Swain Rapporteur General. Shri I.R Kumar gave his impression of the Symposium, Prof Laxman Rao and Mr. Antony Kidd presented their appreciations of the manner in which entire symposium organized.

The Chief Guest Dr. Rao highlighted the need of adopting suitable technologies in area of Library and Information services, with a thought on low carbon foot print and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA).

Feedbacks were given by several delegates on various aspects of the conduct the symposium.

The following papers were chosen as “Best” in different categories:

Best Paper Award : Malhan, I. V : Social Media for Effective Human Networking: Potential Opportunities for Library and Information Centers.

Alenzuela, Reysa C, : Thomos Jefferson Information center Library network: Shaping the Narratives of Dynamics Engagement

Best Poster Award: Singh, Shiv: Cloud Computing for Library Services.
Lewke, Bandara : Application of Information and Communication technology in digital repositories: Gateway to the scholarly word.

Best Presentation Award: Shrivastava, Leena : Changing Perception in Librarianship.

While presenting the certificates to the prize winners, the Chairman congratulated the prize winners and organizers. The session ended with the vote of thanks by Mr. Shriram. Dr. Sanjay Kataria conducted the session as MOC.

The delegates were unanimous in recording their appreciation of the services rendered by Dr. Sanjay Kataria and Dr. Sudeep Sharma in organizatiing ETTLSI-2012.

Boarding Lodging and Transportation :

The Venue of the symposium JUET Campus at Raghogarh is located in rural area in the Distt. Guna (North West M.P). All the delegated were received from locations like Bhopal, Gwalior, Guna , Ruthiyai. All were housed in Guest house and hostels of the campus. Arrangement for food was made in the Annapurna. The support of JUET in all these arrangements is gratefully acknowledged.

Financial Support:

The Symposium had to meet a heavy expenditure for various activities like paper pre-prints, announcement, banners, boarding and lodging, logistics transportation, TA/DA etc. The total budget of symposium is about Rs. 11 Lacs. Beside the registration charges from delegates, the financial support received form following agencies.

1. Govt Agencies : CSIR, ICSSR
2. Publishing Houses : PeroQuest, Balani Infortech Emerald Publishing ,Springer, IET, Wiley
3. Service Providers : 3 M India, Krishan Distributors, Prime Books Service, Hotel Metro Resort, Hotel Sara Guna , Yadav Computer and Electro-state.

The financial support received is gratefully acknowledged.

TAIL PEACE :

The conduct of the ETTLIS-2012 at JUET Raghogarh Guan was highly successful event, truly international character, thoroughly professional in conduct and extremely disciplined in term of organization. The Symposium not only brought 180 delegates together but provided platform where experiences were shared, ideas were exchanged and new thought processes emerged and left every one with the sense satisfaction. The apprehension that existed before the symposium started vanished with the conclusion of two days event successfully and many delegates felt that this symposium will go down as one of the finest.

Most delegates felt that they would like to come back for yet another professional get together at JUET. The symposium succeeded in achieving its goal to a great extent.
