A Brief Report of the Workshop

Civil Engineering Department organized One day Workshop on Geotechnical Investigations for Embankments on October 27, 2018. The Workshop was inaugurated by Er. M. K. Acharya, Chief Engineer (Procurement) MPRDC Bhopal and Shri Yougesh Gupta, General Manager (Maintenance) GAIL Vijaipur. Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Prof. J. S. P. Rai presided over the inaugural function, welcome and introductory address was given by Dr. Sumit Gandhi and Dr. N. K. Samaiya presented vote of thanks.

This Workshop aimed at bringing together the practising engineers, designers, researchers, academicians and the students for sharing and updating current knowledge in the field of geotechnical engineering and various issues relating to soil testing methods for embankments. The following were the Resource Persons:

Er. M. K. Acharya, Chief Engineer (Procurement) MPRDC Bhopal

Topic: Need and importance of soil testing: Civil Engineering perspective.

Dr. N. K. Samaiya, Associate Professor, JUET Guna.

Topic: Causes of failure of embankments.

Dr. D. K. Shukla, Assistant Professor, JUET Guna.

Topic: Stability of slopes.

A good response from the practicing engineers from different government agencies viz. PWD, WRD, Municipal Corporation as well as private construction agencies viz. PNC infratech Ltd, AARVEE Associates and KHALSA Industries was received. Shri M. K. Acharya CE (Procurement) MPRDC Bhopal was the chief guest to the Workshop and Shri Yougesh Gupta General Manager (Maintenance) GAIL Vijaipur was the Guest of Honor to the Workshop. The other invitees and participants include Assistant Engineers, SDO's, Sub engineers from WRD Guna, students from Naraina Vidya Peeth Engineering and Management Institute Kanpur and JUET Guna. In all 49 participants attended the workshop along with other guests.

The laboratory session was the most popular. The participants showed keen interest in laboratory equipments, testing procedures and analysis of results. Soil tests on CBR value, tri-axial, swelling pressure, direct shear and Atterberg limits etc. were demonstrated to the participants. Laboratory session followed by panel discussion chaired by Er. M. K. Acharya with Dr. N. K. Samaiya and Dr. D. K. Shukla. Many participants clarified problems faced by them in the field.

Chief Guest Er. M. K. Acharya, Prof. S. Arunachalam, Director JPWINCENTRE JUET and Prof. Shishir Kumar, Dean (A&R) JUET distributed the certificates to the participants during valedictory function. The feedback forms on Workshop were obtained from participants and guests in a pre-prepared proforma. The function concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. D. K. Shukla.

The Workshop was sponsored by PNC Infratech Ltd Agra and KHALSA Industries Guna. The management of JUET had given a whole hearted support to make Workshop a great success. The faculty, staff and students of Civil Engineering department, JUET rendered all assistance for the successful conduct of this Workshop.
